This site is intended to help educate and create awareness regarding the disease PKD, or Polycystic Kidney Disease.  Please visit the information page and check the links page for other sites with more detailed information. This site highlights breeders who are working to or who are breeding only DNA PKD tested negative cats in their programs. In order to accomplish a PKD free breeding program, this breeders have had their cats DNA examined for the PKD gene. This is the ONLY true conclusive way to determine whether a breeding cat can pass the gene along to its offspring or not.

Since January 2005, PKD DNA testing has been available for persian and exotic shorthair breeders. Breeders featured on this site are from one of two schools of thought:

* Completely PKD DNA negative, working exclusively with PKD DNA negative cats, OR

* Working towards PKD DNA negative, working to eradicate the PKD DNA1 gene through selective breeding of negatives to positives to salvage the lines.

Polycystic Kidney Disease is a genetic disease of the kidneys that can be detected through DNA testing. It affects cats, dogs and even humans. Since January 2005, PKD DNA testing has been available for persian and exotic breeders.

PKD DNA results reveal if a cat may develop or carries the gene that causes the disease. If a cat doesn't have the gene, he/she cannot pass it along.

Ultrasound is effective in showing the extent of the disease if it is already active, not necessarily if he/she will develop it.

Thus, why breeders who are listed MUST be DNA testing for the disease as the ultrasound is unable to reveal that a cat POSSESSES THE GENE if he/she is asymptomatic at the time of the scan.

We also highly encourage breeders who are breeding DNA tested PKD NEGATIVE cats to have their names added to our breeder list.

You may also add any individual cats on related pages. These will be listed under the cattery prefix alphabetically.

Complete the listing form and send a photo of a PKD DNA negative cat and we will add you to our breeder list. The only requirements is that you send proof you are testing and display our banner or logo on your website.

DISCLAIMER: These breeders have furnished PKD DNA1 documentation to our site that they are testing their cats. We, however, cannot and do not warrant that all cats and kittens being offered for sale on these catteries' individual websites are PKD DNA free. As many catteries are salvaging their lines, potential buyers who want to assure their kitty is negative or out of negative parents need to ask for their own proof.
